When Are Oral Steroids Used?
Oral steroids are prescribed when children experience wheezing or when their lungs are not effectively moving air. This can occur in various respiratory conditions, such as:
- Acute Asthma Exacerbations: When asthma symptoms are severe and not well-controlled with standard medications.
- Bronchitis: Inflammation of the bronchial tubes that can lead to breathing difficulties.
- Bronchiolitis: Often caused by viral infections in young children, leading to inflammation and swelling in the small airways of the lungs.
How Do Oral Steroids Work?
Oral steroids, also known as corticosteroids, help manage and treat inflammation in the airways. They work by:
- Reducing Inflammation: Steroids decrease the swelling and irritation in the airways, which helps open up the airways and makes breathing easier.
- Decreasing Mucus Production: By reducing inflammation, oral steroids also help to decrease the amount of mucus produced, which can further improve airflow.
Administration and Effectiveness
- Dosage: Oral steroids are typically given in a specific dosage and duration, based on the child's weight, severity of the condition, and overall health.
- Onset of Action: It often takes 6 to 12 hours to begin seeing the effects of oral steroids, with peak improvement occurring after a few days.
- Course of Treatment: A "steroid burst" is a common term for a short course of oral steroids used to manage acute symptoms. The goal is to use the minimum effective dose to control symptoms and then taper off as the condition improves.
Monitoring and Follow-Up
- Observation: Monitoring the child’s response to oral steroids is crucial. Improvement in symptoms should be noted, and any side effects should be reported to the healthcare provider.

What to expect when you contact Kids 1st Urgent Care
Your call will be attended to by an experienced pediatric emergency medicine triage nurse, who will gather information regarding your child's age, medical history, and current illness or minor injury complaint.
Following Kids 1st Protocols, the triage nurse will assess whether your child's medical history and current condition are appropriate for urgent medical attention from our Kids 1st providers.
Your contact details and location will be forwarded to a Kids 1st Provider. Our objective is to dispatch a medical provider to your location within one hour of your call. Please note that high-demand periods and local events may occasionally result in extended arrival times beyond our standard one-hour commitment. The Kids 1st Provider assigned to you will communicate their estimated arrival time and notify you promptly of any unexpected delays.
The triage nurse will facilitate access to our patient portal, where all of your child's records and test results will be conveniently available to you.
